Have you ever asked yourself, what do I do when everything is going wrong?
“My uncle told me I wasn’t very smart. So I always try to work harder. That’s just stuck with me…
Even in school, reading took me such a long time to understand what I was reading.”
This client’s challenge was letting go of working more, harder, longer so that she could recover, rest, repair, reduce cortisol and improve her results. I would assign “x” and she would do X+.
Julie is someone I’ve worked with for almost a decade. In the midst of her coaching, which includes not only her weekly workouts, but coaching through plateaus, coaching the adoption of a new way of doing things incongruent with everything she’s been taught and believed for decades, I discovered one reason she can easily get stuck in limited beliefs and is unable to change them.
She believes it has to be hard. It requires hard work. She believes losing weight is hard. She believes it’s still calories in calories out. She struggles to relax doing anything that isn’t moving or exercise or somehow “work.” It comes from feeling not good enough.
This will get in the way of our clients reaching their potential. Or it could be you and it could get in the way of you reaching your business or personal health potential. Find out what you can do when everything is going wrong.
When Everything Is Going Wrong and You Don’t Know Why
When everything is going wrong but you can’t actually figure out why… this may help.
My intentions with this episode are to help you:
- Identify how you could actually be the REASON you’re not moving forward
- Make good use of those lousy times you’ve had (or will have)
If you work from home, there is going to be a moment when everything is going wrong. It might last a day, a week or months. I’ve had both.
Recently….
The garbage disposal stopped working on Sunday before Thanksgiving.
Trimming weeds along the side of the house, I cut right through a drain line coming from my water softener to my house. Yes, I did that.
Let me mention I have a 14 week old puppy.
I had the carpets set to be cleaned for guests for Thanksgiving.
My social media support team was coming over to shoot videos, fully aware we would deal with carpet cleaner. I of course was confident carpet cleaner would likely be at the end of the 1-6pm time frame, since they always are.
I had scheduled not one but two experts to come for the garbage disposal and the drain line. The first arrived unable to work on the drain line. The second never showed up and so had to reschedule though I was waiting all day even after the chaos of earlier.
My videographer showed up, we’re in the midst of shooting and the carpet cleaner shows up. Puppy going crazy and barking in his pen….throughout this mess. He’s uncontrollable when let out so there’s no good solution.
If you remember commercials for Calgon? It was worse… but there was no Calgon.
So how did I lead a team meeting, put on my video face and keep it together all the while giving instructions and making payments, making calls, taking calls from the techs on their way or unable to make it?
How I Cope When Everything Goes Wrong
Here’s how.
- Exercise! It’s so tempting to skip it. For me at least. I can one-more-thing and try to push through doing whatever I might think will help like calling for help, fixing myself, etc. Which rarely helps! And honor your energy. Some days it’s best to walk, others an interval sprint really helps purge lots of anxiety.
- Sleep. Absolutely best thing I can do is go to bed early. I went to bed before 7 last night I kid you not. Now I read til about 7:30 but still, right? I got up at 4. Thats nine and a half hours of sleep which is wonderful and some would think 4 is early but I’m a morning person. I love getting more done between 4 and 8 than most do between 8 and 4!
- Eat right. High protein low carb. Not no carb but when under stress you absolutely have to eat well. While you may get away with an extra coffee when not stress, when under stress you may feel like you need it more and it will trash you MOST! Hydrate (LMNT) and eat protein and veggies.
- Laugh. Absolutely find a friend, a sitcom, a memory book and laugh at how crazy it is now but will pass! I love the friends who can talk with me about how crazy the rest of the world is while we’re not! Ha! For me, it’s a friend who is also in the business of building something online, or who can understand the silliness of human behavior questioning every little thing about a health product while eating orange Cheetos. I have a colleague that I grew really close to for this exact reason. I get it and he gets it when no one else does. I have another friend who is not in the business, and doesn’t understand it but always always has my back and can coach me as some friends can’t because they’re biased.
